BlizzCon 08: World of Warcraft Class Panel
Strages - 13.10.2008 10:20am
This comes straight from the ground floor of BlizzCon '08 - Blizzard's annual epic gaming lovefest.

There has been some interesting discussion on the class panel this year, mainly because they have decided to make some much-needed overhauls to all the classes and the way they play. They won't be redoing any talent trees, but they will be adding and reworking many talents and abilities to make them relevant AND place the emphasis on player skill, rather than class - a "return to fun" is the way one dev put it. So, instead of players being chosen for their class/spec, they will be chosen for their skill.

Also, it looks like my poison, the shadow priest, will be getting some much needed love! Their DPS cap was removed and they will be focused on a viable raid dps class/spec instead of just being a mana battery. Maybe I will start playing again...

Anyhow, lots of other good stuff for your class of choice - head on over and check it out! Additionally, for more BlizzCon '08 coverage, head over to VoodooExtreme!

Apple Patents "The Dock"; Color Blue is Next
Strages - 08.10.2008 04:42pm
Straight from the "you've got to be kidding me" department comes this news, Apple is awarded a patent for "The Dock" with Steve Jobs as the inventor.

They'll pretty much give anyone a patent for anything these days, won't they? There are many similar such implementations of GUI interfaces with similar functionality to the Dock that go all the way back to the 80's that could possibly be considered prior art. It's possibly more ridiculous that they listed Steve Jobs as the inventor - I had a good laugh at that.

I hope everyone is doing well in these scary times!

Chuck Norris Jokes Move Over - How disbarred is Jack Thompson?
Strages - 26.09.2008 09:36am
In the wake of possibly the best news I've heard in the past two months (being an economist, the last two months have been particularly painful), that is, Jack Thompson has been disbarred, a new ongoing internet joke has been created that could rival that of Chuck Norris facts. The new joke is none other than Jack Thompson is so disbarred -- How disbarred is he?. Here's a snippet:

Quote:
That all being said, there is a game of sorts being played on Twitter right now that is 110 percent awesome. It appears that Lore Sjoberg, once of Kotaku and always of kicking the internet's ass, started it up by Twittering:

Jack Thompson is so disbarred, he's not even allowed to approach the bench at a picnic table.

And:

Jack Thompson is so disbarred, he can't even file briefs in his underwear drawer.

Which was followed by: Jack Thompson is so disbarred he can't even practice the law of gravity.

And about a bazillion other Twitters by other people making me laugh until my sides hurt.

A few of my favorites:

Jack Thompson is so disbarred, sharks can eat him without violating the tenets of professional courtesy.

Jack Thompson is so disbarred he isn't even allowed to read Shakespeare.

Jack Thompson is so disbarred he can't even play basketball because it's on a court!

Absolutely BRILLIANT!! There are some really, really good ones in the comments of that article too. If you want to join in on the fun - or at least participate by laughing - you can head on over to the So Disbarrred twitter site.

This is going to keep me entertained in between my and my colleagues watching monkeys try to pass a Wall Street Bailout. Fun.

AMD Fusion: What Vista Gaming Should Have Been Like?
Strages - 18.09.2008 02:11pm
About 30 minutes ago, AMD released a new gaming-centered tool called Fusion which sets game processes to highest priority and disables lots of unnecessary services and other processes while in a game.

Quote:
Designed to help optimize your PC for smoother, more responsive game play in the latest PC games with the touch of a button, the AMD Fusion for Gaming utility helps achieve the performance edge previously only available to highly technical enthusiasts. It works by temporarily shutting down background processes and intensifying processor performance with AMD Boost. That means you can keep all the features of Microsoft Windows Vista ready for when you need them, but turn them off when you are ready to get down to serious business – gaming.

Made with simplicity in mind, we still let you behind the curtains and into the advanced interface to change how the utility works. You can customize with user selectable profiles which optimizes your PC for gaming. Also, you can easily build your own profile and choose exactly what you want disabled for a leaner footprint. Want to squeeze every bit of performance from your system? Engage our most advanced acceleration technologies such as Auto-Tuning and Hard Drive Acceleration. Push the limits for how lean and mean you can make your Gaming PC.

For those of you that followed Vista while it was still known as Longhorn might remember that this type of functionality was supposed to have been built-in to Vista from the start. Longhorn was supposed to cache it's state and everything in RAM to the hard drive and go into "sleep mode" when a game is executed to free the hardware completely for the game. This isn't quite like that, but it's certainly closer to that than what Vista is currently like.

I'm going to give it a whirl tonight when I get home. I literally JUST switched to Vista Ultimate on Tuesday night and am currently liking it; however, I think I'm going to have to reinstall all of my games because they don't seem to be working after my clean install (formatted my OS drive, which had XP SP3 on it). Also, if anyone has been wondering where I've been, I've been totally consumed by the awesomeness that is Spore. IT LEAVES FEEDBACK OR IT GETS THE HOSE AGAIN!

The Future Of Graphics: Time Sweeney Interview
Strages - 15.09.2008 09:39am
Ars technica has an excellent interview up with Tim Sweeney, the man behind all the iterations of the Unreal Engine, about the Intel's Larrabee, competition between Nvidia and Intel, and where the future of 3D is going. It's not terribly technical (very little technical material, however, there are some terms that some may not recognize), but it is a very detailed, insightful, and (most importantly) exciting look at where the industry is heading. Here's a snippet:

Quote:
And what else could you do? You could do a ray tracing-based renderer. You could do a volumetric primitive-based renderer; one idea is to divide your scene into a bunch of little tiny spherical primitives and then just render the spheres with anti-aliasing. So you can get really efficiently rendered scenes like forests and vegetation.

There are really countless possibilities. I think you'll see an explosion of new game types and looks and feels once rendering is freed from the old SGI rendering model.

Remember, the model we're using now with DirectX was defined 25 years ago by SGI with the first OpenGL API. It's a very, very restrictive model that assumes you're going to generate all the pixels in your scene by submitting a bunch of triangles in a fixed order to be blended into some frame buffer using some blending equation, and the fact that we have these ultra-complex programmable pixel shaders running on each pixel—that part of the pipeline has been made extensible, but it's still the same back-end rendering approach underneath.

Fun With Bill and Jerry - Microsoft's Attempt At "Cool"
Strages - 12.09.2008 04:14pm
Microsoft has been airing their new Vista commercials featuring the likes of Bill Gates and Jerry Seinfeld. These have been floating around the web for a few days and I saw one of them on TV the other night, but in case you've been living under a rock, here they are in all their glory:

Shoe Circus:

New Family:

Total Crap or Intelligent Lunacy? I'm undecided, but I laughed.

WoW PvE-to-PvP Tranfers: 4 Years Too Late
Strages - 12.09.2008 01:04pm
Blizzard announced today that they will allow Paid Character Transfers from PvE servers to PvP servers - functionality that has been asked for by players for a very long time (along with the ability to transfer to other servers, which came into effect about 18 months ago). Looks like Blizzard is trying to lure players back who have abandoned WoW before WotLK launches.

As usual, Blizzard is way late on implementation. Long live WAR?

European Space Agency To Retire 'Jules Verne' In Ball of Fire
Strages - 05.09.2008 02:53pm
The 'Jules Verne' - the European Space Agency's (ESA) first robotic space freighter - will be retired in a fiery final decent to Earth right around now over the Pacific Ocean. This is the first of four robotic Automated Transfer Vehicles (ATVs) that are costing a reported €1.3 Billion (~$2 billion) per vehicle. This vehicle was so successful that there is talk about developing a crew transport vehicle based on the design. If the ESA, which has a minuscule budget compared to NASA, can spend $8 billion on single-use robotic vehicles that work beyond expectation, why can't NASA develop a decent shuttle replacement? Pretty cool nonetheless - if you find space-related items interesting, definitely check that article out. Good stuff!

Spore Hits This Sunday; First Review Suggests Problems
Strages - 05.09.2008 12:30pm
Spore, Will Wrights next big game (that's finally NOT a Sims game), will hit stores on Sunday in the States. Interestingly enough, publisher Electronic Arts decided that it was a good idea to release it in the US last - an American games comes out in America last, call me crazy, but I don't get it. Non-issues aside, apparently, Gamestar.de was less than impressed by this jack-of-all-trades-master-of-none game, however, they ere highly impressed by the editors that allow you to create creatures, units, and various other things. Do you plan on picking up Spore? I think we will - I'll let everyone know what I think of it.
